Taiwan is a net global exporter with many manufacturers increasingly specializing in relatively small custom run, fast turnaround injection molding and other manufacturing activities. The large number of small efficient companies creates intense competition and Taiwanese manufacturers must invest aggressively in reducing art-to-part time.
The individual value of most small custom manufacturing runs makes face-to-face "feel the steel" meetings between buyer and supplier impractical, but the need for interaction to ensure first-time quality remains.
Key point: There is a huge opportunity to create an innovative client-server virtual mock-up environment to enable concurrent virtual interaction on the 3D model by remote buyers (or designers) and manufacturing suppliers. Such a system would be a natural fit with Taiwan's trading mentality and add significant value and advantage for Taiwan's custom run export manufacturers.
Key point: Many innovative Internet business models (for example PriceLine.com) efficiently dispose of time-dependent/perishable products such as hotel rooms, rental cars, airline tickets, fresh produce, cargo container space etc. Excess manufacturing capacity can be considered a "perishable commodity" and highly customized short production runs utilizing excess capacity could be reverse-auctioned via an Internet exchange if a viable mechanism to enable virtual prototyping and verification were available. The opportunity exists to become a "broker" (meta-market maker) effectively matching excess supply-side manufacturing capacity with demand-side buyer/designer need through the medium of a virtual mock-up exchange. Envisage an entire online custom part tender>bid>mockup>verify>cut>deliver meta-market efficiently matching buyers with excess capacity. There is a real opportunity to become the #1 such excess capacity exchange using the Taiwanese market as a pilot.
